Quiet Moment – Tutorial #159 and Blog Candy!

Published by zindorf at 8:54 am under Tutorials

dsc07166.JPG

Today’s tutorial has a bit of a different color combination going on.  Sometimes I get in a rut and use the same colors over and over.  Thought I would experiment and brighten things up a bit with this card.

I’m using a stamp sheet by Innovative Stamp Creations “Minibook Series: Be Thankful”.

Here is the link to Innovative Stamp Creations Website:   http://www.innovativestampcreations.com/ischomepage.html

I also have a stamp sheet of these to give away as blog candy!!!!

dsc07169.JPG

If you want to be entered to win this great stamp sheet all you need to do is leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite sunset/sunrise color combination.  If you are getting this blog update by e-mail you will need to click on this link so you can leave a comment at the bottom of this post:   http://zindorf.blogs.splitcoaststampers.com/2009/01/04/quite-moment-tutorial-159-and-blog-candy/

I will use a random number generator to select the winner on Wednesday, January 7th.  Good luck to all!

Now on with the tutorial.

Supplies:

Stamps: Innovative Stamp Creations “Be Thankful”
Paper: Stampin’ Up Whisper White, Soft Sky & Basic Black
Ink: Stampin’ Up Summer Sun, More Mustard, So Saffron, Distress inks Brushed Corduroy, Black Soot, Walnut Stain, Mustard Seed & Weathered Wood
Accessories: Brayer, 1 1/4″ Circle Punch, White Gel Pen, Green & Brown Faber Castell Markers, Post it Notes, Sponges

dsc07170.JPG

Brayered So Saffron ink at the top of a 3.75″ x 4.5″ piece of  Whisper White Card stock.

dsc07144.JPG

I wanted it to be brighter and warmer in color so I brayered over the So Saffron Ink with Summer Sun Ink.   Yep, that’s better.  :)

dsc07145.JPG

Punched a 1 1/4″ circle out of the sticky part of a post it note and put it on the card stock as a mask for the sun.  If I would have masked the sun before any color was put on the White card stock, of course the sun would be white.  I did it this way so the sun would not be so stark in color.

dsc07146.JPG

Brayered More Mustard ink at the top of the card stock only going down far enough from the top to go over the Sun mask.

dsc07147.JPG

Removed the sun mask.

dsc07148.JPG

Streaked Weathered Wood Distress Ink at the bottom of the card stock using the direct to paper technique.   These Tim Holtz Distress ink pads are so very perfect for direct to paper techniques because the ink pad is raised up from the base of the pad.

I streaked the ink in order to try create some ripples in the water.

dsc07149.JPG

Brayered Eathered Wood Distress ink at the bottom of the card stock to blend the streaking in a bit.

dsc07150.JPG

Used the same direct to paper streaking technique with a Mustard Seed Distress ink pad in the middle of the card stock and going in to the Weathered Wood inked area a bit.  That really warmed the water up some.

Be careful not to cover all of your Weathered Wood ink with the Mustard Seed ink.  Remember Blue and Yellow make Green.

dsc07151.JPG

Masked the sky area of the main image panel with a Post it note and Sponged More Mustard ink at the post it note edge to create a little beach area.

dsc07152.JPG

Took the post it note mask off and flipped it around.  Now I am masking the water and the beach area with the post it note.  Sponged Brushed Corduroy ink on to create some mountains in the distance.

dsc07153.JPG

Added some Darker Walnut Stain ink to the bottoms of the mountains.

dsc07154.JPG

Stamped the Cattails with Black Soot ink.

dsc07155.JPG

dsc07156.JPG

Sponged More Mustard ink heavily at the top Right corner of the main image panel to create a little interest in the sky.

dsc07157.JPG

Outlined the right sides of the Cattails with a Brown Maker.

dsc07159.JPG

Outlined the right sides of the Cattail Leaves with a Green Marker.

dsc07160.JPG

Added a few highlights to the Cattails and a few dashes in the water area using a White Gel Pen.

dsc07161.JPG

Used the direct to paper technique again on the bottom left corner of the main image panel and on the right side of a Soft Sky Background panel.

dsc07163.JPG

Assembled card and here it is finished measuring 5 5/8″ square.

dsc07166.JPG

I hope this tutorial has inspired you to experiment with color combinations today.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

May your day today be filled with peaceful scenes.

Until my next post. .. . . . . . . . .

Hugs,

Michelle

Wow! Another beautiful creation! My favourite sunset combination is purple and a peachy pink colour. It reminds me of a holiday in Scotland where we could stand at the front door and look out across the sea to the Isle of Arran. I will have to post some pictures on my blog so you can take a peak. Thanks for sharing, Michelle. You are such an inspiration.

I have never brayered a card for several reasons. I am rather new at cardmaking and it’s sometimes difficult for this senior citizen to catch on to things. I have a new motto this year “I can do it”, so, I’m ready to try this amazing techinique. All because your instructions are so fantastic and your cards are breathtakingly beautiful. I love the varied hues of pinks, lavenders, blues in a sunset. Thanks for sharing your talent. Joyce

  9. Brenda Evans says:

Beautiful card as always. I love the blazing pink and orange combo that we get here in Colorado once in a blue moon. I run and get my camera everytime it happens and take pictures. It’s like the sky is on fire and you get this extremely changing color over the horizon from pinks and oranges and reds.

  10. Theresa Perkins says:

So good to have you back. Hope your holidays were all you wished for. This is a gorgeous card. I’m still practicing my brayering technique. Slowly but surely, I’m improving with each attempt. My favorite sunset colors are the muted tones of red to pink with orange and yellows – something you’d see in the southwest maybe. But any sunset over the water is a good one to me.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Randa

  14. Ronda says:

Wow! My fav color for a sunset would be the reds, orange, and pinks that make the sky look like it’s on fire. I love it with a lake added in because it makes me think that God is telling us “You did great and made it through another day. Here’s to you. Keep up the good work.”
I love you cards and thank you so much for sharing with us.

  22. Gorgeous Michelle! I get tired of the same ol blue sky-green grass-blue water scenes also. Sounds like I need to follow your lead and experiment also! I love to have some bright pink or red in sky scenes. Those are always my favorite IRL because my grandpa always said that the more red there was in the sunset, the nicer day tomorrow would be. Thanks for all the time you take to teach and inspire me!

  23. Marg says:

A lovely card! What perfect timing for your question. I was just driving home from work yesterday and the sky was beautiful. The sunset sky was a complete rainbow. I haven’t seen this before. It went from a dark grey to a purple, blue, turquoise, green, etc. I wished I had my camera. It was a treat as we have had frigid weather these last few weeks.

I love how you have done these – so much so that when I get over this flu I am going to get my brayer out (I cannot use a brayer) and practise as I love doing sunset scenes using burnt oranges and yellows or pinks and blues which merge together in lilacs.

I asked for a brayer for Christmas and got it, but my brayering needs a lot of work/practice — thanks for your step by step tutorials. Perhaps some day I’ll get the hang of it.

  81. Lelia Pierce says:

I am always amazed by your talent. I have to say I have tried brayering (went out and bought one when I started reading your blog) and mine looks NOTHING like yours. That being said, I still like to come and drool over your work. ;o)

I think the best sunset I saw was pink and oranges…

    Thanks for sharing!

  82. kathy says:

My favorites have been Summer Sun and More Mustard but, now that I’ve seen your tutorial, I will have to experiment! You are an inspiration to me as you break down the steps so wonderfully that you’d think I could make my card as gorgeous as yours. In actuality, it doesn’t work out as well but I still try! Thanks for the chance to win your blog candy.

  83. Michelle Hoger says:

Amazingly beautiful, and realistic sunset Michelle. I wish I had your ability to translate what I think and see into a piece of art. I was just recently in Maui (for our 35th anniversary), and the sunsets there were outstanding. They were yellow, pink and orange blending into violet, and were probably the best I have ever seen. Mind you, here on the Canadian prairies, we get some pretty spectacular sunsets, where reds and pinks light up the horizon. When it comes to sunsets, all colours are glorious.

  84. Cara says:

Beautiful! I would get so much use out of that stamp sheet! I think my favorite combinations would be a dark pink with a hint of orange.

  85. Paula says:

I love your art, but your color combos are what impress me the most and keep me from trying any of these. I just got my first set of stampin up colors (earth elements) for Christmas so I just have to suck it up and try one. I love your sun set combos! I almost wish you had a color combo cheat sheet for us to look at when we are trying a sky background. I tried one one time and it turned out very tropical, not what I was going for but it was still ok. Thanks for the blog and sharing your work!
    Paula

  86. Carol says:

Anything you do inspires me to no end!!I’ve just gotten my inks up to speed with the soft sky and baja blue, and now you switch off!LOL!! I LOVE your Stardust Morning Tut using : Almost Amethyst, So Saffron and Wild Wasabi. Beginning of the Day is also a favorite: Apricot Appeal, Really Rust More Mustard and Soft Sky. Thanks again for the lessons! Would love to win the Candy too!

  87. Debbie says:

I have been so complacent lately, but you have inspired me to pick up my supplies and create something today. I love your work, I don’t respond often at all. But this card is really beautiful. I think I would do this in blues, purples and pinks. Thank you so much for all of your beautiful work!

  88. Oh this is so beautiful. I would love to case this and you can be sure I would give it my best shot! Gorgeous! My favorite sunset is pink and orange.

  89. Carole says:

Oh Michelle!! You blow my mind! I love every thing you do! Just when I think “this is my favorite color”, you come up with something else! I cannot pick a favorite combination – I love them all!

  90. Billie says:

My favorite color combo for a sunset. That is a hard one. I like the warm colors in the card today. I think those are my favorite. I like the purple and orange color combos you see in a sunset. My house sits facing the west and when the sun is shining I get to see sunsets every day almost.

  91. Evelyn in Oregon says:

Each time I look at one of your tutorials, I say, “I’m going to try something like that!” Still haven’t done it! However, I’m getting closer. lol Thanks so much for all the wonderful color and design. The choice of colors seems perfect for this image.

  92. Nadine says:

Lovely composition. I really like the yellows, oranges, blacks and browns. A touch of purple is almost always a nice addition. TFS

  93. sarita says:

another lovely card – i love the sunset – my favorite color combination of sunset/sunrise is whatever God decides He wants at that time! i live in the desert so we have lovely sunrises, a lot of pink and peaches. We had a sunset a couple of months ago that was RED…looked like fire in the sky..it was gorgeous..thank you for the opportunity to win some blog candy…take care

  94. Jessica says:

    Stunning card, as usual!

My favourite sunset/sunrise colours from that very early moment when the sun isn’t yet in sight, and the colours are orange and pink.

  95. Nancy Dawson says:

    Michelle
My husband and I belonged to a gold mining group in Arizona. We never got rich, but the fun of all our friends was all we needed. sometimes we would find enough gold to buy gas one way on our trip.
The sunset I remember most was a sunset of red skies at night. The red framed in the clouds around it was the absolute most gorgeous you could imagine.
The red had a stipple effect with clouds waving through.
All of the clubs forty eight people present sat in their chairs and watched that sunset
We watched as the red skies left little red prisms as the day closed and night was here. Then we had the colors of the camp fire to remind us of that fantastic sunset
The old saying of red skies at night a sailors delight, red skies in the morning sailors take warning. Well it is true as the next day the skies were vibrant blue and the day was a master peace from heaven.
The desert offers colors that go way beyond brown.
We all in the club hoped the color we saw in the desert was gold. But mostly we saw fun and companionship.
    Marilyn

I like to take my inspiration for sunsets or sunrises from the real thing. One morning in December we had the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen. It was a blazing red, more of a hot pink, that glazed the edges of the clouds. The hues were all in the red family and very intense. The further you got away from the horizon the sky went back to violet and then deep blue to black. I don’t know if I can ever repeat it, but one of these days I will have to try. Thanks for the chance to win some great blog candy and to remember that beautiful sunrise.

My favorite setting sun colors are the Pink, Red, Orange fading into the twilight colors of Pink to Lavendar. I love to watch thin cirrus clouds when the sun sets too as they reflect the sun’s colors so well!

    Hi, Michelle,
You do such amazing work! I love your style. I think my favorite color combination is the next one that I see. I’m not sure that I’ve seen a sunset/sunrise combination that I haven’t loved. For instance, I just saw a new one the other day and it was gorgeous. So I came home and used the colors that I saw. They were: Night of Navy, Denim, Baja Breeze, So Saffron, Apricot Appeal, Orange. When you get colors like that in close proximity with objects silhouetted against the light, it’s really beautiful, just like your cattails. Thanks for all your great tutorials.

  253. Marilyn Wolk says:

My idea of a perfect sunset has dark grey (SU Basic Grey) blending into burgundy, ruby red, really rust, cameo coral, blush blossom, so saffron, bordering blue, then into going grey, sahara sand, and into a very muted citiscape (tall building silhouette) horizon of dark grey again. My husband has some beautiful sunsets featured on his music web site – musicalgym.com.

  254. Helen Orbanus says:

Oranges…soft, bright and brighter………….the perfect sunset!!!!!!! I would love to win this set.

  256. Diane Cooper says:

    Beautiful card Michelle!
Normally I would never put orange and pinks together, but I love it when mother nature puts them together at sunset. I was thinking of giving cameo coral a try if I ever get around to brayering….
    Love your tutorials!
    Diane

  270. Lauri Pittman says:

Wow. Gorgeous card! I adore these colors you used. I use the same colors you used for the sunset, but I might add a little purple or red to the sky area around the sun. For a sunrise I’d add a lot more red to the sun area and more black because is would still be somewhat dark in my sunrise.

I missed your inspiration and tutorials in December. Glad to have you back!

  271. Conniecrafter says:

Oh my this is so pretty, the cat tails look so real, wonderful work! Oh boy I never really thought about the colors of a sunset that I like, I remember a few over the lake when we went camping when I was younger and I remember seeing like an aqua with like a pinkish toward orange glow above that I can remember thinking was just beautiful!

  272. My favorite sunset/sunrise image was inside the Grand Canyon..and I will bet your technique would fit right in

  273. PollyHi says:

    Michelle,

Thanks for another inspiring tutorial, I can almost feel the soft warmth of the morning sun. Living in Hawaii, each sunrise and sunset is a wonderful surprise of the most beautiful colors!

My favorite sunrise starts with the landscape of trees in Not Quite Navy. Then the sky would be in Almost Amethyst, Lovely Lilac, Pumpkin Pie, Cameo Coral and Rose Red. With the Zindorf touch, these colors would come alive.

  274. mel says:

Hi Michelle – Very nice card – glad you’re back to blogging, and hoping your holidays were joy filled. I think my favorite sunsets are when the sun is really almost gone and there are clouds in the sky and they glow that crazy purple red. There is a pretty high mountain (at least in east coast measures) by me and when you hit it right you see those fabulous colors.

    Melba

Another beautiful card. Your work is just amazing…you make it look so easy! I love all sunsets. Growing up in San Diego, I loved being at the beach to watch the sun fade away behind the ocean. Hi! Great card! My favorite sunset was in St. Thomas – when the last tip of the sun goes down, there is a gorgeous spark of green along the horizon of the ocean. It’s difficult to describe the color, but it is similar to a brilliant emerald green, with brilliant gold above. It’s absolutely an amazing bit of God’s handiwork! Thanks for the candy opportunity! Kris, Wadsworth, OH

I absolutely love getting your tutorials you are such an inspiration. You have encouraged me to think outside of the box . I am bound and determined to create cards using the brayer. I have gone thru paper galore…but worth it. I love the technique so it is just taking time.
My favorite sunset was just a month ago.( A winter one) A pale yellow with grey from the clouds and that pale blue sky near sunset It was the most beautiful sunset I have seen in a long time..

  363. Darsana says:

I am so glad you are back to blogging and doing your tutorials. I LOVE them. One of my favorite color combos for sunsets is the pink to purple to blue which happens just before the sunsets( it actually has already set behind the mountains and I can only see the remanents of the yellow in the sky over the mountains. But MY Favorite is orange and blue(it just shows that God is a true Bronco Fan)! Thank you for this inspiration and have a lovely day.

  364. Hi Michelle, beautiful card.
We have the most perfect cold weather at the moment. With the most beautiful sunrise/sunsets. The color combination I like most is colors your see on a very cold morning when the sun is just coming up. That bit of pink in the sky and that very light blue. I have a picture in my blogbanner I took last year and that picture had excactly the colors I tried to describe. Just beautiful.
Lovely blog candy. Thanks for giving the chance to win.
    Eveline.

I love just before sunrise when the sky is relatively clear, when the upper sky is light, light blue and the horizon has hues of pink, fusia and sometimes purple. Stunning. And speaking of which, your tutorial is absolutely stunning as well. I love the little flowers flowing downwards. Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  370. Susan says:

Happy New year! Great work, your colors are wonderful!!

  371. Pat J says:

To find out what colors I would use, I actually tried brayering a sunrise and it turned out ‘decent’ thanks to my following your blog for some time now, reading every tutorial in detail. I used the inks I have, which are many, but find I still need a few more colors. (Can you believe that??!!! : ) ) I have no SU pads, so the ones I used were Palette Hybrids in Celadon, Aqua Mist (neither quite dark enough), Ripe Avocado, Dark Chocolate, Lavendar Moon, and Lemon Tart, Summer Sunrise, and Berry Sorbet. Because I didn’t have the right blues, my water area miraculously turned into a lovely meadow, serendipitily it turns out, since I also didn’t have a cattail stamp. So I Cuttlebugged Bird Call in black and cut the silhouette, trimming and shortening to fit the left side. The rising sun is just below the bird’s breast, just off-center. The scene has tree-covered rolling (and layered) hills on the horizon. If I knew how and had the right equipment, I’d definitely send a picture of it to you. Finished size is for an A2 card. Thanks for all your sharing. I admire all of your work.

  372. Lindalee says:

  377. Kim S. says:

  380. Bermoce W/ says:

Mmmm – hard to pinpoint a certain color – because sunrises and sunsets are so beautiful here in New Mexico. I like the blue hues when the sun is setting, and it fades eastwards into a pinkish color with a little bit of tangerine orange. And I could come up with thousands of other color combinations, that comes with each season. Pick me – I would love this stamp set – and as always – you’re great.

  381. MollyK. Barry says:

Michelle, Michelle, Michelle, Michelle, what can I say with all those posts above me that hasn’t already been said… This is magnificent.. and you captured the sunset so beautifully, that I am at a lose for words… I live by the ocean, and since I face west, I’ve caught many spectacular sunsets from my terrace… I must admist that when I see the pinks in the sky my heart skips a beat at the wonders of nature and the beautiful canvas that I am lucky enough to have at my front door
