Sweet Baby Seal - Tutorial #166
Happy Sunday! If you haven’t notice this week I have been working with some old retired sets from Stampin’ Up. Some I will be parting with shortly. This baby seal from the 2003 Stampin’ Up set Cold Weather Friends is a favorite of mine, but I am saying farewell to it. That being said, let’s get stamping!
Supplies:
| Paper: Stampin’ Up Whisper White, Baja Breeze, Lavender Lace, Elegant Eggplant |
| Ink: Stampin’ Up Almost Amethyst, Baja Breeze, Palette Noir Black |
| Accessories: Prismacolor Markers, Brayer, White Gel Pen, Versamark marker, Purple Ribbon, Sponge, Post it Note, Fine Detail Clear Embossing Powder, Heat Gun |
Stamped the image with Palette Hybrid Noir Black ink on a 3.5″ square piece of Whisper White card stock.
Colored the image with a Buff Prismacolor Marker.
Added Eggshell Prismacolor marker to the underside of the seal and to the dark areas.
Colored over the entire image with a Versamark Marker and heat embossed using fine detail clear embossing powder and a heat gun.
Brayered the top half of the card stock with Baja Breeze ink.
Ripped through the stick edge of a post it note and used it as a mask for the bottom half of the card stock.
Sponged Baja Breeze ink right at the post it note edge.
Removed the post it note. Ahhhhh, just look at him. .. . . . . . , lol.
Sponge a bit of Baja Breeze ink around the bottom of the seal to create a shadow effect.
Decided to Brayer Almost Amethyst ink at the top of the card stock not covering the Baja Breeze ink entirely to give a bit of interest to the sky.
Cut a 2″ x 5.25″ piece of Baja Breeze card stock and used the swirl cuttlebug folder to emboss it.
Brayered Almost Amethyst ink over the card stock to make the swirls stand out more.
Assembled card and added some white back to the main image with a White Gel pen. Yes that’s right, you can use white gel pen on top of an embossed image. 
Here is the finished card measuring 5 1/8″ x 6 5/8″.

That little seal is adorable. Beautiful card. It’s snowing here today so the card is very apporiate. We seldom see seals in NJ but we do have those lost dolphins trying to live in the freezing river.
How did you get up the nerve to part with some of your old stamps? I keep trying to weed through them but never have any success!
This is so pefrect for a day like today, like Beth above me it is snowing and I’m in NYC, and although I live on the beach, I’ve only seen a seal when I visit the Brooklyn Aquarium.. so I must say you captured it perfectly…

He is adorable! Great card colors and look how just those two marker colors with highlights just popped right off the page! Great tip also on using the brayer over the embossed cardstock. Once I started with my brayer (thanks to you) I find myself using it ALOT - to make mine own colored paper to mtach a pattern or just to set the background color the way I want it. White paper better watch out in my craft cave!
Oh, I love it! Wished I had this set. He’s is precious and reminds me of one I met at Sea World in the 80’s. This seal was in the feeding tanks, couldn’t be trained, and I talked to him in “babytalk” and he would sit there look at me, roll his eyes around, and goo-gaa at me (just like a baby). My friend said, “he knows you are going to feed him” - but he didn’t. I didn’t have feed yet to give him. I said, “look at the others flopping around from person to person so anxiously, but this one is sitting so still and listening to everything I was saying to him. I finally got feed and fed him. He was a darling one. (it was the first time I had left my dog for this long, and had called my mom [who was keeping her, and wasn’t really a dog person], and found out mom was loving the way my dog was treating her - just like she would me (very protective). So I thought, if my girl wasn’t missing me (though I knew she was) - I’d take this seal home with me. LOL
One question: when you brayered the blue, did you do it from top to bottom - and then the lavender who brayered from right to left???? Thanks,
What a cute little guy, I think he would have a ball in my neck of the woods this winter since it’s been cold and windy, with lots of icy snowfall.

I am shocked that anyone is strong enough to part with their stamps…LOL! It is truly something I must do shortly and as tight as the dollar is around here, I should do so in order to have any fun money for new stamps! My DH is not currently working due to health issues. Hopefully this too shall pass. Anywhoo, loved the tutorial and the darling card. Baby seals have a very compelling beauty all their own and the stamp you used really reveals and captures that quality. Have a good day Michelle, and thanks for your many efforts. Oh, I have to try this later today! I realized a few weeks ago, I had trouble following your tutorial. What it was… since I am left handed… you often tilt your image to the right… as a leftie I was getting the sky and the ground mixed up … because I need to tilt to the left … when I figured that out I was good to go! This card is lovely! I hate to hear you are selling some of your stamps but I will watch your listings because I’ve only been buying stamps about a year and I’d love some of the retired SU sets. I loved this card and I also loved the card you did earlier this week with the Summer by the Sea set. If you decide either, please let me know. I’m still keeping you and your husband in my prayers. Keep your chin up! I know it is hard to be patient, but He has it in His authority to work this all out for your family. We went through something in our family several years ago and it was hard (I won’t lie to you). But now I look but I am thankful to how He worked it out for us. He will you, too! A couple of scriptures for today: I Peter 5:7 and Psalm 55:22.

OMGoodness! I’ve been looking for this stamp set FOREVER — just for the seal. For a long time I collected baby harp seal “things”. I just can never find the set when I’m ready to buy.

The word “cute” usually isn’t my first thought when I am admiring your artwork, but this card is definitely CUTE! I’m a big fan, and always in awe of your work.
