Naked Chickens? It Just Might Be Fall

DSC_0009

I’ve been getting so many inquiries about the girls (hens) lately that I thought I better give you a chicken update.  :)  Here in Ohio we get a wonderful change of seasons, for Fall the leaves on the trees change color and fall to the ground, the fields turn golden and we have warm days and cool nights.   This is also the time for molting.  Molting you ask?  Yep Molting!  That’s when you see half naked chickens running around in the chicken yard.  They are ashamed of how they look so you will see them running out of the picture frame like in the above shot (top left), lol.

This is poor JoJo, she is usually so beautiful but right now she is missing half of her feathers, including all of her tail feathers..  During molting a whole lot of their feathers fall out and beautiful new ones come in.  It looks painful and I try not to pick them up if I don’t have to.

When their new feathers poke through the skin they have a little waxy cap on the end that they pick off and leave laying everywhere.  Now doesn’t that look painful!  Kinda makes me ashamed I complain about shaving my legs.

The entire chicken yard is covered in feathers, it looks like a real massacre has happen here.  Just imagine trying to rake feathers into a pile to clean up with a slight breeze blowing, lol.

Egg productions stops for the chickens that are molting since they are using all of their energy to make new feathers.  I hardly blame them for taking a break.

Only half of the flock is on breaks so we are still getting the most delicious fresh eggs.  MMMM

While we are on the subject of eggs, did you know they come in all colors, sizes and shapes, lol.  Yep, they are not all uniform in size like in those cartons at the store.  Check out the brown oblong one in the photo above.  It is so long the lid on the egg carton will not shut over it..  It is probably a double yoker, bonus!

Well that is what is happening right outside my door.

Thanks for stopping by. . . . .

Huge Hugs,

  1. Thanks for updating on the chicken yard. I do miss hearing about the chicks and especially the way the seasons change in Ohio. Only there for a short time but what I loved was how there were definitely distinct seasons. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Thank you, thank you. I’ve been thinking about your chickens, and wondering when we’d get another update. I love your cards, and I love your chickens. TFS

  3. Do you use the feathers in your projects at all? Just wondering!

  4. I have you on my Pinterest so you don’t know me but Thank You So Much for Sharing!! My mom had a small hobby farm and I miss her so much. When I came to your blog it put a smile on my face. I have very fond memories of her on that little farm.
    Hugs~

  5. I love your chicken stories! I would love to have chickens, mostly for the fresh eggs! There is no comparison! Luckily I live in an area where I can usually get fresh eggs from friends. I think you should totally use a feather in your card – let that be your challenge!

  6. Thanks Michelle, I enjoy hearing how the girls are doing!

  7. I never was interested in chickens until my niece moved to a farm and
Got a bunch. Now I see the reason to really enjoy them!

She has all different kinds with all different personalities
She has a pair of Easter egg chickens..I thought she was
Joking but they really do lay blue and green eggs

Anyway, now I love your chicken stories!
