Frosted Chickens – Nope, Not a New Dinner

It’s early morning and I made a trip out to the coop to take care of the girls needs. You know, water, food and treats. I live in Ohio so, right now, there is snow, lots of frost and thick fog this morning. It can be pretty but the girls don’t particularly like it. A handful of the them ventured out to ask me for treats as I entered their yard. Yep, they have their own yard, own chicken run and large coop. They are all princesses and don’t like snow on their feet.

All of my white girls are current brown since we had lots of rain before the big freeze hit us this week and their entire yard was mud for days. So, these princesses are due a good royal bath. Which they will get when the temps rise and they stand out in the warm rain, lol.

Treat time! Cracked corn is the treat of the day and it warms their little bodies up. They get this treat on a fresh shoveled bit of earth, not on a bed of lettuce, lol.

This girl does have two legs. Chickens will tuck one of their legs at a time up in their feathers to keep it warm when they are standing.

They are still laying, mmmm breakfast time!

I’m showing you this picture of my two hives so when you see these northern bees in my later posts this Spring you will know just how amazing they are.

Also, I do take care of the local birds. Russ probably would wish I didn’t put a big honking bird feeder contraption on our deck but I love to watch the birds during these cold Winter days. Of course, there is not one bird in this photo because I am standing out there taking photos, lol. Normally there are at least 30 birds or more out there at any given time. I probably spend more money on their feed than I do the people in this house.

Not such a pretty picture right now but I’m keeping it real for you all. 🙂 I have issues.

Nope, We Are Not Coming Out!

A little bit of a chicken update today. You know we are getting lots of snow when I go out to tend to the chickens and I don’t have 24 hens at my feet trying really hard to trip me every step of the way. This is their run this morning. Not even one chicken foot print in that snow, lol.

A closer look at their coop door. . . .yep they see me but are not going to venture out, oh no.

A little bit (really a lot) of coaxing got this girl to take a step out and then right back in the warm coop she went.

In this picture the girls are busy eating some cracked corn, which they love, love, love. Want to hear them. Click on the picture above. 🙂 You will see and hear them eating and making their happy sounds. I love them. You need to get girls of your own so you can hear this daily.

Do We Need to Grow Webs Between Our Toes?

As we all know, life can get a little trying sometimes. For the past 7 days it has rained and rained and rained. So much rain that I’ve had to pull out the chicken boots in order to wade through the pond which covered the chicken yard. My girls kept looking at me from their warm hen house with a question in their eyes “do we need to grow webs between our toes in order to go outside again?” There was even so much rain that our switch that runs our well pump for the house was under water and so we had no water on the inside of the house. Yep, you got it, lots of water outside, no water inside. I just have to laugh it off.

But today is a better day, the sun is shining and the water outside is slowing going down. Our well pump switch is drying out, we can now see the ground again in the chicken yard and my girls are happy to be out slurping up all of the drowned worms and such. When their bellies are full they retire to the old lawn chairs to perch and soak up the sun.

This just reminded me, when you have a few days of craziness it makes those good days following so much sweeter.

I’ll be back in a bit with a new project for you. 🙂

Don’t have a Garbage Disposal, Get a Chicken or Two or Twenty Four

Awe, so many of you ask about the girls (hens) on a regular bases, well when it is cold outside I spend about 2 minutes with them, I’m a sissy when it comes to temperatures of 20 degrees or lower. I just go out long enough to fill their feed and water containers and give them any scraps from the kitchen I can find. They will eat pretty much anything, including chicken left overs. I know gross, right? But any protein you can give them in the Winter months the better. Just think, in the summer they have lots of protein flying and crawling around in the way of bugs and worms but, in the Winter, nothing. Screen Shot 2018-02-09 at 8.42.34 AM

They are better than a garbage disposal because they give you the yummiest eggs in return. Seriously, when I clean out the frig the girls are in heaven.

Naked Chickens? It Just Might Be Fall

I’ve been getting so many inquiries about the girls (hens) lately that I thought I better give you a chicken update. 🙂 Here in Ohio we get a wonderful change of seasons, for Fall the leaves on the trees change color and fall to the ground, the fields turn golden and we have warm days and cool nights. This is also the time for molting. Molting you ask? Yep Molting! That’s when you see half naked chickens running around in the chicken yard. They are ashamed of how they look so you will see them running out of the picture frame like in the above shot (top left), lol.

This is poor JoJo, she is usually so beautiful but right now she is missing half of her feathers, including all of her tail feathers.. During molting a whole lot of their feathers fall out and beautiful new ones come in. It looks painful and I try not to pick them up if I don’t have to.

When their new feathers poke through the skin they have a little waxy cap on the end that they pick off and leave laying everywhere. Now doesn’t that look painful! Kinda makes me ashamed I complain about shaving my legs.

The entire chicken yard is covered in feathers, it looks like a real massacre has happen here. Just imagine trying to rake feathers into a pile to clean up with a slight breeze blowing, lol.

Egg productions stops for the chickens that are molting since they are using all of their energy to make new feathers. I hardly blame them for taking a break.

Only half of the flock is on breaks so we are still getting the most delicious fresh eggs. MMMM

While we are on the subject of eggs, did you know they come in all colors, sizes and shapes, lol. Yep, they are not all uniform in size like in those cartons at the store. Check out the brown oblong one in the photo above. It is so long the lid on the egg carton will not shut over it.. It is probably a double yoker, bonus!

Well that is what is happening right outside my door.

On another note. . . .

I got in the mood to create a chicken card today after hanging out for a bit this morning with my girls (hens) and buddy (rooster).

Even when you give the girls a great set up with nesting boxes you will still find eggs here and there. Just look at those 3 cute eggs in the coop corner. I guess that was a comfy spot on a chilly morning. Never fails, one girl will lay in a weird spot and there soon will be more hens standing in line ready to lay in the same place.

A couple of the girls did as they were taught and left me eggs in the nesting boxes.

This old girl always comes in the coop to inspect what I am doing in there. She will just hang out on the door edge until I’m finished gathering eggs. Kind looks at me like I look at a repairman that is in my house, with a bit of a watchful eye.

This is Jo Jo. It’s hard to see but she has a crippled up right foot. She was born with it that way. She actually walks on the top of her right foot instead of on the bottom the way it is turned up. When she hatched it was apparent her foot was not right. I tried to straighten it out with a little homemade boot but to no avail. Some may have just did away with her but, we let her enjoy her life as if she were normal and she has reward us by being one of our best layers. Jo Jo is super sweet too. I believe we made the right decision.

We only have one Rooster, Stewie Jr. He is a mixed breed. The only one to hatch out of a clutch of seven eggs. Here he is in all of his glory, surrounded by his girls, there are 14 of them. He is one lucky rooster. One thing you have to respect about a rooster, they will sacrifice themselves to a predator in order to protect their hens. I’m hoping Stewie Jr. never has to do that. He makes quite the commotion when there is a hawk in the area so the girls will take cover and then he stands out in the open a bit just daring the hawk to swoop down. With that said it makes perfect sense that roosters out weight the hens by quite a bit. Stewie stands about 6 inches taller than the girls. He is a big boy. I can’t see any hawk being able to lift him off the ground.

And that is what is happening in our neck of the woods. . . . . .

Chicken Chilly! :)

Nope, this isn’t a Chicken Chili recipe post, lol. It is a chicken chilly post because it is a chilly 12 degrees this morning in the chicken yard and I just gave the girls and boy some hot oatmeal to eat to warm their bellies. Yes, I spoil our flock with warm oatmeal on cold mornings.

I have received many requests for an update on my girls (hens). I haven’t done one for a really long long time, I’ll explain why.

I couldn’t do a chicken post without talking about how our flock has changed considerably over the past 4 months. My old hens are no longer, it was sad but once a chicken stops laying it is time for them to be processed. After all, fresh eggs are why we raise chickens. This was a very hard lesson for Russ and I to learn, being from the city and all, we did not grow up around live stock. But to continue raising chickens we had to learn that lesson and we did all the processing ourselves. School of hard knocks!

We replaced the old girls with new chicks that have grown almost to full size now. They will be laying in February. I will be so happy to have fresh eggs again. We have had to buy eggs at the store for the past month and a half. Doesn’t seem right but, we waited to long to process the old flock to make room for the new, another lesson learned. After all of the hard lessons we learned this year I certainly appreciate every single bite of chicken and every single egg, whether it is from our own flock or from the store. Society is so very far removed from where our food comes from, Russ and I now have it in perspective.

I haven’t shown you this guy for a long time, he was a fluffy little chick just a few short months ago. With the 14 hens we have just this one very large rooster, he is a busy guy and a bit camera shy so I had to click this picture of him on the run, lol.

Now that I have this post out of the way, my future chicken posts will be much more lighter in content. Time for some stamping. .. . . . .
