I’m Goldie and that’s right, I’ve been moved to my very own crib.  Darn other girls kept climbing into the nesting box I was in with my special eggs and laying more eggs for me to sit on.  So, my chicken Mommy, because she loves me, moved me and my special eggs to my very own room where the other girls can’t get to me.

Check it out.   It’s a dog crate, but I have renamed it the “hatch pad.”  My babies should be safe in here with me for a while.  Monday is the big day and I’m hopeful at least 3 of my 6 eggs hatch. It would be super eggciting, cluck, cluck, if all of them hatched though.

I’ve  have been very diligent sitting on these special eggs.  I only get off the nest for a few moments a day to relieve myself and eat and drink.  I’ve pulled my chest feathers out so the eggs would be right up against my skin and have kept them all at the perfect temperature for 17 days  now.  Only 2, maybe 3 more days to go!

Beat it Fern, can’t you see I’M BUSY HERE!

So, our girl Goldie, once again, went broody and decided she was going to try to hatch some infertile eggs.  Well, I took pity on her and ordered some fertile eggs from Mypetchicken.com so her efforts were not in vane.   I switched out the infertile eggs for the fertile eggs 8 days ago.   Just look at her, so serious about her job.  12 more days and we will have some chicks hopefully.

She is sitting on 6 eggs.  I’m told there is usually a 50% hatch rate.  I’m going to candle the eggs tonight.  Candle means putting a flashlight up to them to see if there is a chick growing in the egg or not.   The ones that are not growing will be disposed of so they don’t spoil and break in the nest.  This will be my first attempt at candling so my fingers are crossed.

Last year Goldie hatched two eggs out of 6 and I now have Jo Jo and Winnie as a result.  Two very fine hens.  But after they hatched I took the chicks and put them in a brooder and raised them outside of the flock.

This batch will be raised by Goldie within the flock.  I’m very nervous about this. I’m hoping she will be a good mother and protector.  I keep reminding myself that chickens have hatched and raised their young for hundreds of years, so hopefully things will go well.

Michelle named me Sugar when I was just a little yellow chick and before she knew just what a rotten Chicken I could be.

I peck at everyone’s legs hoping someone will pick me up and love on me and I also get into Michelle’s drink when she is not looking. . . .but, she got smart and started using a darn cup with a lid, shesh!

UPDATE ON BUTTERFLIES THINLITS AND A SPECIAL OFFER!

Hello there,

I just made a trip out to the coop to give the girls a snack.  Fruits and veggies that are a bit soft for Russ and I go out to the coop.  Never fails, they are all waiting at the gate for me.  It’s like having a dog happy to see you, but not .. . . . really they want what you have in your hand.

Russ gets the biggest kick out of me chopping up things for the chickens.  They are very capable of chopping stuff up for themselves,  it just makes me feel better, lol.

Tried to no avail getting a picture of them with a piece of fruit in their beaks, but no they give you the other end every single time.

As for the two chicks, well they are no longer considered chicks.  They are now considered pullets (hens that haven’t laid yet).  We could be wrong and they might be roosters.  Actually, we are guessing  that the one on the right is a rooster.  The tail feathers on that one are sure sticking up pretty high.  But, what do we know we have never had a rooster before.  Time will tell.

Anyway, they are still trying to fit into the flock.  It will be a while before they find their permanent place in the pecking order.  They are at the bottom now, no place to go but up, right?  The past few weeks they have just been trying to stay off the big girls radar.  They sleep in a corner in the coop instead of on the roosting bars with the other girls.  They have each other and that seems okay with them.  🙂

Our grand daughter, Hailie Jade named the small one with the crumpled foot Joe Joe, Josephine if it’s a hen.   No name yet for the one on the right.  Suggestions are always welcome.  Names that could be used for both a girl and boy are especially welcome.

So that’s the scoop at the coop.

Hello There,

Remember these two little cuties?

Why yes I am. . . .

The majority of the day the two chicks were glued together.

These big girls can look awfully scary to a little one.  But I believe they will fit in fine.  I witnessed Big Buffy, the big yellow chicken above beck one of the chicks and the chick returned the peck while flapping her wings.  🙂  Good sign.  Especially since Buffy is the top chicken in the run.

After being chase around a bit by the hens things settled down and the chicks hung out enjoying their new found freedom and a big pile of hay to scratch around in.

That was a long day for these little ones and it was time to nap.

As the sun went down last night all the hens went into coop as usual and the chicks where huddled together in the run not knowing what to do.  So I put then through the little door in the coop and wish them a good night.

I’m very happy to report all is well.  I opened the door to the coop this morning to find everyone happy.  🙂

It’s going to be a good day at the Zindorf Coop.
